The Church Choir

HISTORY

The Church Choir

In the Methodist church, the Reverend Ministers and Preachers, preached the word of God and there was a need to sing to water down the theme for that occasion. The choristers were regarded as choral evangelists, committed to winning souls for Christ through singing. Small groups of singers were formed at various Methodist churches to serve this purpose. They were expected to show good character both within and outside the church. Since they were also regarded as evangelists the wearing of the choir robes made them look like Reverend Ministers. The songs and anthems that are raised and the music from the church organ will always have meaning and shall be a blessing to the church, community and nation.

A group of dedicated and knowledgeable choristers conceived the idea of forming an association of the Methodist church choirs in 1974. At that time the choristers from Cape Coat, Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi, and Winneba met at the first consultative meeting at Winneba to discuss the formation of the Association’s constitution, the appointment of interim officers and to plan the holding of the first National Conference.
